By the spring of 1969, the Grateful Dead were a band in full creative ferment. The classic five-piece lineup โ€” Garcia, Weir, Pigpen, Phil Lesh, and Bill Kreutzmann โ€” was hitting its stride, with Mickey Hart now firmly embedded as co-drummer, giving the rhythm section a propulsive, almost physically overwhelming weight.
